Saginaw has one of the more extensive programs following the roadmap laid out by the SME Education Foundation’s PRIME (Partnership Response In Manufacturing Education) initiative. It involves six high schools and a career center (the Saginaw Career Complex) and is highly visible to the county’s 27,000 students. It is also very much in the hearts and minds of the Saginaw Valley’s base of manufacturing companies. “Without the input, guidance, and support of these manufacturers,” said Geno, “we would be nowhere with this program.” Read full article: https://bit.ly/3zB14Ah #SaginawISD #CTE #SCC #PRIME #Manufacturing

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced today her funding priorities for K-12 education as the state readies for major investments in our schools and teachers. Major highlights of the framework include: - Closing the funding gap between schools in lower and higher-income communities with a $262 million investment. This goal was put forward as part of Proposal A in 1994. - Investing funds in students who need them the most through a weighted funding formula which distributes education dollars more equitably. This model supports at-risk students ($20.4m), special education ($60m), and English language learners ($12.2m). For special education specifically, we are allocating $6 million for pre-employment training, expanding a remote learning library, and hiring more qualified personnel for children with disabilities. - A combined $500 million for districts to hire and retain more educators, psychologists, social workers, counselors and nurses, and provide student loan debt relief for mental and physical health professionals who work in high-need districts. - Substantial investments to help students plan for life after high school by facilitating post-secondary transitions: $50 million to double funding for CTE, vocational, and skilled trades programs. $55 million to expand dual enrollment and early middle college programs. And $100 million to hire more guidance and career counselors. - $500 million for school infrastructure Other notable pieces include: - $402 million to increase the foundation allowance by 4% ($163/$326 per pupil) - $350 million to stabilize enrollment over 2 years for districts after COVID related unpredictability and pupil losses. - $41.5 million for literacy coaches, an increase of $10 million from current law. - $50 million for ongoing student mental health programs. - A 2% operational funding increase for community colleges. The plan utilizes the surplus to propose over $1.7 billion in one-time funding and allocates over $900 million for ongoing investments, representing Michigan’s most significant investment in public education to date.

This group of ladies inspire and encourage their students to work on areas that are hard and feel the success from their hard work. Students know that the paras have the heart to care, hand to hold, and ear to listen. This year of COVID strengthened the services that they provide daily. In celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week, please meet Jason LaPorte. Jason teaches the credit recovery program at the Juvenile Detention Center School. In his class, students have the ability to recover lost credits from previous grades. In the credit recovery program, students take online classes and are able to work at their own pace. Jason receives the most satisfaction from seeing his students embrace the process of putting in their time and effort to pass classes. This is Jason’s second year teaching at the Detention Center School and he reports being happy to be a member of our SISD team. Jason has been married for 11 years to his wife Amie. They have 3 children: Chase, Alexis, and Bo. In their spare time they enjoy running their kids around to practices and coaching many of their teams. They love spending time outdoors and doing anything that involves time with family and friends. Thank you Jason!

In celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week, we invite you to learn more about Melissa McCommon, SOAR Teacher at the Transitions Center (TC). Melissa has been instrumental in creating a positive climate at TC this year. She has organized and created various shirts for staff to wear, such as 100th day, Rock Your Socks, Autism Awareness, and 150th day! She is currently working on the end of year shirts. All extra-curricular activities are completed on her personal time. Although it seems simple, staff joining together and wearing matching shirts create a bond and sense of community - something we all need. Thank you, Melissa! #SaginawISD #MIteachAppreesh #ThankATeacher #SOAR #TransitionsCenter

It's time for another teacher appreciation moment! Say hello to Connie Griffore, Careers in Education/Teacher Academy Instructor at the Saginaw Career Complex. Connie has worked tirelessly to innovate within her program in response to the teacher shortage we are facing in education. Two years ago, her program was approved to offer a CTE Early Middle College track, offering students a jump start to their career as a teacher at no cost to them. Just this year, a second track was added, focusing on early childhood. These opportunities were designed to mitigate student barriers and were coordinated with two post-secondary institutions. Connie is extremely involved at the state level with curriculum development for her program and is regarded as one of the best CTE instructors for Education in the state. Connie embraces challenges with a positive mindset and ALWAYS goes the extra mile for her students. Mrs. Griffore exemplifies not only what an outstanding teacher should be, but the kind of teacher we would all want for our own children. Thanks for everything you do Connie! #SaginawISD #SCC #MIteachAppreesh #ThankATeacher
