HEALTHY BODIES, HEALTHY MINDS

Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds (HBHM) fosters healthy lifestyle practices among students in a safe and enjoyable environment across 28 local schools spanning four counties, benefiting over 6,000 children annually. The program emphasizes the importance of healthy eating and promotes increased physical activity both in and outside the classroom. By instilling healthy habits from an early age, HBHM aims to mitigate health risks and cultivate lifelong wellness practices that positively affect the entire community.

This project was funded in whole or in part by the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Michigan Fitness Foundation. This institution is an equal opportunity provider.

Josh Miller, Nutrition Supervisor

Mr. Miller has been with the HBHM program since it started in 2012. He has been an integral part in developing the program’s success. What started out as a seven-school, sixty-classroom program has grown into a thriving program encompassing four counties, 28 schools, and over 250 classrooms due in part to his passion for the HBHM program.

Mr. Miller started his teaching career as a Physical Education teacher, and you can see his passion for fitness in the classroom. Whether he is leading the children in a lively FitBit or telling them to get 60 minutes of exercise daily, it is evident that he loves encouraging children to get healthy through not only healthy food but also healthy physical activity!

Favorite Foods: Blueberries and bananas, asparagus and broccoli. (He loves a good broccoli cheddar soup on a cold day!)
Fun Facts: When Mr. Miller isn’t working, he can be found with his wife watching one of his three children play various sports, including baseball, hockey, lacrosse, basketball, and volleyball. And when he’s not watching his children play sports, he can be found playing golf.

Shari Hatfield, Nutrition Facilitator

Mrs. Hatfield has also been with the HBHM program since 2012. Her love of kids and passion for health have been one of the reasons the program has grown to what it is today. Mrs. Hatfield has a background in fitness, and it shows in the classroom when she leads the children in an exercise. Her enthusiasm spills over to the kids; you can feel the joy when they are working up a sweat doing a fun FitBit. She believes that fostering a love for fitness starts young.

Favorite Foods: Mrs. Hatfield’s favorite fruit is the apple; she loves incorporating it into recipes when she can. She adds apples to her morning oatmeal and salads at lunch; you can usually find an apple in her lunch! Her favorite vegetables are green beans and peas.

Fun Facts: When Mrs. Hatfield isn’t working, she usually watches one of her two children play sports with her husband. Her son is an avid hockey player, and her daughter plays volleyball in college! These two sports have her traveling all over the state! Mrs. Hatfield’s favorite form of exercise for herself is running. She enjoys that she can run anywhere as no special equipment is required.

Leslie Blumer, Nutrition Facilitator

Mrs. Blumer has been with the HBHM program for eight years. Before that, she was a classroom teacher for ten years. What started as a job has turned into a passion. She loves being in the classroom with children and watching them learn and grow into humans, and she is passionate about being healthy. Her favorite part of the HBHM program is when children tell her they have just tasted a fruit or vegetable for the first time.

Favorite Foods: Mrs. Blumer’s favorite fruits are lemons and blueberries, and she loves recipes that combine the two. She’s always searching for new ways to make lemon/blueberry items for her kitchen. Regarding veggies, Mrs. Blumer’s motto is More is More! She loves almost all vegetables and puts them into every recipe. Her favorite way to eat vegetables is in a simple stir fry.

Fun Facts: When Mrs. Blumer isn’t teaching, she hangs out with one of her nine children or five grandchildren! She loves teaching them all about gardening and making recipes using their grown things, especially spaghetti sauce with fresh tomatoes and basil!

Allie Nye, Nutrition Facilitator

Mrs. Nye is the newest member of the HBHM team; however, she’s not new to the health program. She was a member of the health team in Genesee before she came to the Saginaw team. Her background as an educator has been a welcome addition to the HBHM program. She is enthusiastic about helping children learn to be healthy, and you can see that in her attitude when she’s in the classroom. Her favorite part about the HBHM program is the fact that the children get to try new foods in a safe environment. She believes that the positive peer pressure from classmates is imperative to getting children to try new foods.

Favorite Foods: Mrs. Nye’s favorite fruits are raspberries and blueberries. In the summer, she grows her own vegetables in her backyard garden. She loves growing tomatoes, onions, and cilantro so she can make her own salsa. This year, she included jalapenos so she could make a spicier variety for her family.

Fun Facts: When she isn’t working, Mrs. Nye can be found with her husband and two small children enjoying the outdoors. They love blueberry picking in the summer, riding bikes in the fall, sledding in the winter, and going for muddy-puddle hikes in the spring!
