GREAT LAKES BAY REGION, MICHIGAN – Math in the Mail™ was awarded a $10,000 CARES Grant from the Hemlock Semiconductor Community and Regional Empowerment Fund to sponsor the 1, 2, 3 Dinosaurs Bite math kits for 3-year-olds in the Great Lakes Bay Region.
Megan Coonan, Mathematics Consultant at Saginaw ISD, stated, “An additional $10,000 means more children in the Great Lakes Bay Region can receive the 1, 2, 3 Dinosaurs Bite math kits! We are fortunate to have many partners within the Great Lakes Bay Region focused on strengthening math skills in young learners. An outside evaluation of Math in the Mail™ found that participating children, upon entering four-year-old preschool, outperformed their peers more than two times better on foundational math skills. By enhancing children’s mathematical understanding and confidence, Math in the Mail™ helps to make foundational mathematics knowledge accessible.”
Math in the Mail™ prepares young learners for K-12 science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) experiences and careers in the Great Lakes Bay Region of Michigan. Six free kits containing a book, manipulatives, and ideas for play are mailed to qualifying three-year-olds over the course of a year. The program is free for families living in Arenac, Bay, Clare, Gladwin, Gratiot, Isabella, Midland, or Saginaw counties with household incomes at or below 250% of the federal poverty guideline, and low cost for others by subscription.
Math in the Mail™ is a collaboration between the Bay-Arenac ISD, Clare-Gladwin RESD, Gratiot-Isabella RESD, Midland ESA, and Saginaw ISD. To learn more about Math in the Mail™ visit www.mathinthemail.org.
