LETRS Professional Learning Opportunity

As part of Public Act 144 of 2022, the Michigan Department of Education is providing evidence-based literacy instruction focused on the science of reading at no cost to eligible educators and administrators.

The Michigan LETRS Science of Reading Professional Learning Course provides sustained and job-embedded science of reading professional development to support evidence-based reading instruction, improve grade-level reading proficiency, and close achievement gaps across the state. These impactful courses are based on Lexia® LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) and Lexia® LETRS® for Early Childhood Educators.

Saginaw ISD is excited to offer Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS®) professional learning, a comprehensive course of study that empowers educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach language and literacy effectively. SISD Instructional Services will offer in person sessions for LETRS and Early Childhood LETRS.

This opportunity is fully funded by the Michigan Department of Education, ensuring no cost to participants. The only difference from other state offerings is that your sessions will be led by SISD’s certified LETRS facilitators and will be conducted in person rather than online.

Through this research-based professional learning, educators will deepen their understanding of the science of reading, explore evidence-based instructional practices, and gain tools to accelerate literacy achievement for all students.

Who is eligible to register?

Any Michigan pre-K–6 educator currently teaching in any Michigan public school or public charter school

Pre-K–12 SPED endorsed teachers

Elementary administrators, those in leadership roles, and district-level administrators

Literacy coaches

Format: In Person

Time: 8:30am-3:30pm

Unit 1: February 18, 2026 The Challenge of Learning to Read

Unit 2: April 29, 2026 The Speech Sounds of English

Unit 3: September/October 2026 Teaching Beginning Phonics, Word Recognition, and Spelling

Unit 4: November/December 2026 Advanced Decoding, Spelling, and Word Recognition

Unit 5: February 2027 The Might Word: Oral Language and Vocabulary

Unit 6: April 2027 Digging for Meaning: Understanding Reading Comprehension

Unit 7: September/October 2027 Text-Driven Comprehension Instruction

Unit 8: November/December 2027 The Reading-Writing Connection
