Summer is for all kinds of outdoor fun! However, with more going on outside, it’s also a time known for spikes in accidents and injuries. The SISD Wellness Committee believes that with the right safety measures, you can enjoy the longer days and warmer weather without risking your health and safety. Fire Safety- • Always grill outside: Never use a grill indoors, on a deck, or close to flammable structures or trees. • Keep a safe distance: Ensure children and pets stay at least three feet away from grills, campfires, and firepits. • Leave fireworks to the pros: Skip out on consumer fireworks and enjoy professional, public displays instead. Water Safety- • Don’t leave the life jacket behind: Select one that meets safety standards for weight and activity when boating or doing water sports. • Never swim solo: Swim with a buddy or in areas supervised by a lifeguard. • Keep an eye on kids: Stay within arm’s reach of children and pets around any body of water. Biking & Hiking Safety- • Wear bright clothing: Boost visibility by dressing in bright or reflective gear. • Stick to daylight hours: Avoid hiking or biking before sunrise or after sunset. • Stay hydrated and sun-safe: Bring water, wear a hat and sunglasses, and apply sunscreen before heading out (remember to reapply every two hours you’re outside).
